Could be this is simple, but since (I think) I learned it wrong to start with, I thought I'd post it.

The gemara says there's a machlokes R' Yehudah and the chachamim on לשכת פרהדרין, does it need a mezuzah, and they're arguing whether דירה בעל כרחה שמה דירה. Does living there perforce count for mezuzah.

Two ways to read it:
1) Everyone agrees that the seven days the cohen gadol lives there should require a mezuzah (for those days); anywhere you live even for a short time requires a mezuzah. (Sukkah would require a mezuzah, except that דירת עראי downgrades it according to the chachamim.) However, according to R' Yehudah, the fact that the cohen gadol is jailed there, so to speak, downgrades the status and it's not called living there.

2) Everyone agrees that the seven days the cohen gadol lives there should not require a mezuzah: it's not a place to live "summer and winter". (Sukkah would not require a mezuzah, except that דירת קבע upgrades it according to R' Yehudah.) However, according to the chachamim, the fact that the cohen gadol is forced to live there upgrades its status, he really lives there, and it's called living there even though it's only for a short time.

I think the first way is easier for me to understand, but I wondered if one can find clear evidence for one way or the other.

My chevrusa points out the if dirah ba'al korcha is an upgrade - from logic we consider a jail more likely to need a mezuzah - it's hard to understand the gemara's explanation of R' Yehudah's reason for his "gezeirah": We don't want people to think that the cohen gadol is in jail. Because, how would putting up a mezuzah help with that; on the contrary, being a jail makes a mezuzah more likely?
